PostSubject: First Time Cruiser! Help Please!   Thu Sep 20, 2007 2:26 pm

I found this site by accident really, I was
looking at the Grand Princess 2008 Christmas sailing and I found a link
here and was looking at your group cruise for it.

I have a
question, it would be myself plus two kids. Three people in one cabin
sounds like a tight fit. Am I allowed to book one cabin for me and one
cabin for the kids? They're 10 and 11 years old in age.

This will be my first cruise ever so I'm going to be asking a lot of questions.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the boards! I am glad you found us. Be sure to check out the Roll Call for this sailing. Lots of nice people on there that will be able to help with your questions. Princess policy regarding young kids in seperate cabins is not my area of expertise, that would be Ivanova (Susan) but regardless of cruise line or ship here are some of the basics regarding cabins.

Depending on the category you chose three people in a cabin can work out well. Balcony cabins and junior suites usually have plenty of room and because of the reduced cost of the third person can be a great value. If you are looking at inside and oceanview cabins it may be better to get two cabins that interconnect. Keep in mind that when booking 2 cabins you are paying the same price as if 4 people where going because the room rate is based on double occupancy. However, if privacy is important to you it may well be worth it. Or, since you are paying for the 4th person anyway, invite one of the kid's friends to come along or another adult friend to help off set that cost.

Hope that helps!

I'm not 100% sure of Princess' policies but, most cruise lines do allow parents to book children their own cabins provided the cabins are adjoining but, have one of the TAs or your own TA confirm that Princess allows this - for some reason, in the back of my mind, I seem to recall Princess may not allow it. But again, I'm not a TA so my information isn't 100% correct.

I took my kids on the Grand when they were 12 and 14. It wasn't too bad at all. We were on the caribe deck (my favorite - larger balconies). The beds fold out of sight during the day. They loved it!

If you book a mini-suite you should easily be able to fit the three of you into one cabin. This will likely be cheaper than 2 separate cabins, and the mini-suite comes with a nice, large balcony!

Your kids will love Princess!

Actually, my dad had a mini suite and his balcony was half the size of the ones on caribe deck, and I had a regular balcony room. Caribe deck balconies are larger and half exposed/half private. The minisuite had a bit more room and a couch/bed and a butler you had to tip but deffinately SMALLER balcony.

If I ever go on the Grand again (and I WiLL), I will book a cabin on Caribe just because of the size of the balcony. Smile

My two girls, ages 12 and 16 shared a oceanview stateroom with us this last October. Although there is little privacy we weren't in our room much except to sleep. The girls were off with the different pre-teen/teen programs having fun until ususally late at night. We required certain check in times and that during formal dinners they had to eat with us but most of the time they were off having their own fun. The girls slept in the two uppers and during the day they were up and out of the way. We usually find that we actually talk more to our kids in situations like this. Almost like you are away at camp. You chat until you start to fall asleep.

Hi, Iv also cruised on the Grand Princess. We did it right before Christmas when everything was decorated. We liked the Grand, but liked the newer Caribbean Princess a little better. One thing these two ships share is MUTS, the big screen at the pool. They used to do Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight, but I feel asleedp during some music concert on right before the movie, maybe the Eagles. How I could sleep through a concert that loud I don't know.

The Grand Princess only has one anytime dining room, so it will be a bit more crowded than newer ships which have two dining rooms for anytime. I prefer traditional, but it was already booked, so they just put you on a waiting list. Traditional is hard to get unless you book pretty early.

If you have any questions, I might be able to answer them too. Grand Princess did not have a card room for instance, it's been converted to something else. She did have a very grand staircase in the atrium.

My husband and I have been on numerous cruises with our two children (Ages 7 & 4). I know they are younger (and smaller) than yours, but we've had no space problems with the four of us in one cabin. We've even sailed in interior cabins!! Their beds fold down at night, but during the day are out of the way. I can never get my children to leave the Kid's Clubs when we cruise, so the only time all four of us are in the cabin is when we are sleeping. I say save the money and book one cabin for the three of you!!
