PostSubject: Saving Tips for Future Cruises   Wed Feb 18, 2009 3:11 pm

I'm not sure if this topic has been posted before, but I was wondering what tips and things you all do in order to save money to be able to cruise more often??

The more time I spend on these boards, the more I want to cruise. We have a vacation fund, but I was wondering what other little or big things I can do to help increase the fund faster and cruise more often.

Any ideas??

Thanks.

Savings? What's that. Laughing I know nothing about that word - savings. Laughing Wink

Everytime I have myself convinced that I won't cruise until the next big cruise, about 10 minutes later I am booked on another smaller cruise.

we have a 5 gallon water jug in the closet and put all of our loose change in that.

if you are a Starbucks addict, skip one of your "regular" stops at Starbucks weekly and put that money in the 5 gallon water jug.

sell stuff on eBay (I've just started back on eBay selling a ton of Disney pins).

eat out less and put that money in the 5 gallon water jug.

assuming you don't already do this, use coupons at the grocery store. then put an amount in the water jug equal to how much you saved at the store using the coupons.

I dropped a note on a different post earlier asking about your Majesty cruise. I would love to cruise again before next year. Tell me more about your plans for this cruise. I could be convinced!!

My dh would probably roll his eyes at me for even suggesting a cruise again since we just got back from an all inclusive trip last weekend. I loved the AI trip ... but realized that I love cruising so much more!!

We've been eating out a lot less!

We also have money taken directly from our paychecks and put into savings.

I've been thinking about trying to sell some stuff on e-bay, is it hard? I read a lot, and tend to buy my books, instead of going to the library, like I should. So, may try selling them. I usually just donate them, but times are tuff! LOL! Laughing

The best place to start is consider looking at the last minute deals and
trying an itinerary that you may not have as first choice. I say yesterday
a 17 day transatlantic for $399.00!!!!!!!! Thats insane!! Vacations To Go
lists the cruises by area and date. Its a nice way for a first timer to see
what is available for various types of cruises. If you do see a cruise you
like call CF for booking it.

Another more important aspect is a question of how you spend your money.
Aside from fiscal frugality one thing to consider is a question of priority. Our
house is half finished and for years we sacrificed everything to complete a
seemingly endless task. I finally decided after watching myself grow grey
quite literally that perhaps my mental well being was being neglected.
Ironically, all for the sake of a material object which I was suppose to own
instead of it owning me. My house is warm, clean, and safe and if it takes
me more time to remodel the kitchen so be it. I like many people was trying
to do too much and too fast. I no longer let it bother me if its not finished
tomorrow.

I took advice from John Lennin who said "Life is what occurs while your
busy making other plans".

Now for some more practical advice. My wife and I dont spent money
on Birthday, Christmas, or any other gifts. We are not overly materialistic
so that part was actually easy. W do not eat out much anymore as we
save that experience for cruising. When we cruise we avoid the Casino,
Spa, and we have at times had some impressive Bar tabs ,but for the most
part we are pretty good at keeping those costs down.

Again, those are mostly due to personal preference. We are extravagant
on balconies which adds dramatically to the cost. Last but not least we
are pretty good about renting cars Vrs. ship sponsored excursions. I read
a lot at sea and buy all my books through Half.com vrs Book stores. Also,
we drive instead of flying which in some cases saves us a ton of money.

Incidentally, we did not book that cruise as it conflicted
with one we were on.

Hope that helps

Craiglist list is a great way to get rid of things at better than garage sale prices and no fees associated with it. I sold lots of baby/kids stuff.

it's not really hard -just research first (pending and closed auctions) to see if anything similar has sold, and for how much.

I normally take my tax refuns and the job bonuses for vacations.

By doing that I was able to go to europe on a 12 day cruise and loved it.

Since we cannot travel for at least 1 year per drs order, we are paying credit card debt and
Hopefully by the time we tracel we will be debt free.

I would be saying the same thing if not for my hubbys unexpected illness. since we cannot
travel, eat at restaurants or crowds what else is there to do? so I am taking advantage to pay
them off because when the dr gives us the go ahead We will be travelling extensively.

Sorry I missed it. Next time PM me. Very Happy

Details - Majesty of the Seas out of Miami on June 8th - ports are Nassau, Key West, CocoCay - 4 days. It sails Monday and comes back on Friday. It's not as cheap as the $399 TransAtlantic on Indy. Shocked That's just sick cheap.

For 3 of us - Ocean View - price is $1,406 (I think Laughing). Which I figure is cheaper than me taking the kids to Ocean City for the week. Wink

Sounds like a great "girls cruise" ... it would be so much fun. Cheers

My girls are not finished school until the end of June and since they have missed two weeks already this school session due to vacations, we unfortunately will not be able to join you. I'll have to look at your other planned cruises ... it would be great to cruise with you and your family. I think we would all have fun and get along well together. Let me know if your plans change or you add any new cruises.

I thought that most kids get out later than mine do. We will have to plan a big old "Family Friendly" group cruise at some point. Very Happy

Maybe Oasis. Laughing

ok guys...no canada bashing...some of us are canadians and you might be offending people. Canada has some great policies but we arent going to debate the good and bad of the countries. They don't let the kids out of school until the end of june.
